Jamestown: Gold was first discovered here in Tuolumne County at Wood's Diggins (which is now Jamestown) in June 1848 by a group of miners from Oregon and led by Benjamin Wood. Jamestown has a certain Gold Country quality which makes it a very enjoyable place to stay. Especially, as this is the location of Railtown 1897 State Historic Park. If many of the locales look familiar, that's because over 300 movies were filmed in this area!

Sonora is the only city in the County, but don't let that fool you as it is still small enough to have its country charm!
